Metros U15 versus Sheffield

Sunday 18th April 2010

Any wandering spectators behind the U13s goal could hear a rousing chat between the newly dubbed Under 15s “family”. It was obvious to those around that the older lads on this Metros programme were out to look after one another.

The earlier game drew to an end and the Metros boys switched from audible laughs and Arctic Monkeys lyrics (thank you Tom Cooper) into a well oiled machine. Line drills looked crisp and fast break drills clinical , as the boys moved into their starting line up.

The starting ten was strong, and an un-coached side showed their raw talent to be great. Although the Metros never took the lead they ran the opposition (a team consisting of two of the most successful junior programmes in the country today) all the way to the wire.

The Metros finished all of the first three quarters drawing with the older opposing team, the attacking play saw some great cuts from young Sharples and a stand out performance from Lewis Curtis between the lines gave some great transition opportunities. Fantastic midfield play from Ben Reddy meant that an attack lead by Will Suter could take plenty of shots. Unfortunately despite the admirable play from every individual the Metros came up short, finally losing by one goal.

The defensive unit looked rock solid, yet to train together properly they shut down a talented opposition to just 6 goals, not to mention dishing out some huge hits and fantastic knock downs. At the business end the Metros coaches could be seen rubbing their hands together at the prospect of handling an attack with not only great talent but no weak links – huge potential.

One thing was for sure, this was not a loss for the Metros, despite the score line, but the start of a great journey. After viewing the game tape, Metros advisor Paul Rabil was quoted as saying... “If this team can learn to play together then great things await”.
