Metros U13 vs Sheffield U14

Sunday 18th April 2010

Metros U13 turned out at a sunny Sheffield to start the first warm up game of their 2010 tour. Both squads left Cale Green on the coach in nervous anticipation of who would start and how they would play.

The coaches decided to give out tour numbers in line with how the squad sheet had been set out; keepers, then defenders etc. This is to assist coaches in getting to know the 19 man squad as quickly as possible and to stop any bickering. The coaches also decided to name the two keepers as Captains for the day. This was again a strategy to stop unnecessary wrangling, but a strategy that proved warranted as both keepers had exceptional performances. Donovan and Burke playing a half each and pulled off around 6 or 7 saves a piece. Even at this early stage, the coaches are confident that this position is in safe hands for the tour.

The 3 remaining long sticks, Jordan, Cordwell and Rees (without an injured Cole) played very well throughout the game, against an enormous Sheffield side (they must use grow bags and miracle grow). Cordwell throwing himself valiantly in front of a shot and taking one for the team; has shown us the importance and need for ribs pads at all future sessions.

Our middies also struggled against the size of the opposition. Even the talent of Ridings, Hackett and Russell struggled against a much larger opposition. The attack therefore didn’t get enough of the ball but we still had good performances from Baythorpe, Robinson and Suter.

The first quarter saw the Metros 2 – 1 down and 8 – 2 down in the second. A good motivational talk from my fellow coaches saw the Metros put a battling performance in the third (1 – 1), with some of our smallest players taking on the huge Sheffield guys and showing no fear. This spirited performance was epitomised by one of our smallest players on the pitch, Will Ramsbottom; showing the kind of mentality that will put us in good stead in the states.

The final quarter saw the Metros go down 5 – 3, bringing the eventual score to 14 – 3 for the Steelers. Our Goal scorers were Ridings 1, Baythorpe 2.

The coaches were very proud of the conduct, skill and effort from all the players and have already started to introduce strategies to improve our squad game. The unity and support that the squad showed for their fellow players was admirable.

Apart from the very full training schedule, we have another 2 warm up games planned, details to follow.
